| In late summer of 1997, Hurshel Smith started to create vessels from domestic woods as presents for family and friends at Christmas. He enjoyed the experience so much he began combining exotic woods with domestics for color and figure. He designs a piece and works on it until it comes out as he envisions it. Assembling the vessels piece-by-piece, mitering and hand-fitting the pieces into unique designs, he chemically bonds them together, turns them on the lathe for shape and size. He uses hand-rubbed oil which is the "old world" way of finishing wood. The average piece may take two or three months from start to finish, but some have taken as much as two years. |
